The history of Bayville, New Jersey is the history of Berkeley Township, which was incorporated in 1875. Prior to 1950 much of the area west of Route 9 was uninhabited, and much of the land east of Route 9 was considered wetlands. Residential and commercial development was concentrated in Pinewald and Bayville along Barnegat Bay. Much of the land west of Route 9 today is included in the Pinelands Preservation area.
Located in Ocean County, New Jersey, Bayville is an unincorporated area within the township. The population was 16,886 according to the 2000 U.S. Census, and development in the area increased after completion of the Garden State Parkway and the improvements to federal, state and county highways in the area in the 150’s and 1960’s.
The small community is located on a peninsula that juts out into Barnegat Bay, and this provides an extraordinary view of Ocean County’s bay area. Local residents and visitors enjoy crabbing and fishing off the 100-foot pier, and strolling along the walking path that parallels the bay.
